Breastfeeding Must Haves

Breastfeeding Must Haves

If you are choosing to breastfeed your baby here is a list of the basic necessities.

Breast Pump

You will need to have a breast pump for those times that you will be away from baby. There are many different types to choose from and some may even be covered by your insurance

  • Manual – Great for on the go, as they are lightweight and portable. Popular ones include Medela Harmony, Lasinoh and Nature Bond.
  • Suction – The Haakaa uses suction to help you express milk. Simply squeeze and attach to your breast and walaa!
  • Electric – Efficient and adjustable for suction and speed. There are hospital grade options, designed with a closed system preventing cross contamination if used by multiple people (which means you can re-sell them!). Popular pumps include Spectra S2, Medela Pump in Style, and most budget friendly is Bella Baby
  • Hands Free – Great for on the go, these allow you to go about your normal routine while pumping. These are relatively new so may not be covered by insurance and are typically more expensive than standard electric pumps. Popular brands include Freemie, Elvie and Willow Pump.

Get your breast pump through your insurance or check to see if your breast pump is covered at Aeroflow BreastPumps.

Milk Storage

If you are pumping you will need a way to store your milk in either the freezer or refrigerator. Bottles or storage bags work the best. If you are short on space then bags that you can lay or freeze flat will work best.

Nursing Bra

A nursing bra provides easy access for baby. I am a big fan of the Kindred Bravely brand (so super comfy) and they offer a combo nursing and pumping bra you can check that out here.

Nursing Pillow

Trust me on this one, you need this. Having a nursing pillow that provides support while you are breast feeding is priceless, it will save your back, your neck and your arms. I used and loved the brest friend nursing pillow for all 3 of my babes and loved it as it provided so much support, but the Boppy is another popular alternative.

Nursing Pads

Breastfeeding can get messy! Nursing pads, either disposable or reusable, are a necessity. These will save you from embarrassing leakage caused by unexpected letdown.

Nursing Shirts

Nursing shirts are a must have. So few clothes provide easy access for baby while providing cover up for mama. You can always double layer, but getting a few shirts for when you are out and a few camis for when you are home that are made for nursing will save your regular wardrobe from the inevitable stretching and pulling required for nursing. I loved these double layer nursing shirts from Old Navy, they provided coverage for my post baby pooch and coverage for baby while nursing.
